How to make the perfect screwdriver drink

One of the most popular cocktails from the family of vodka is the screwdriver drink. Ask anyone who has ever had a cocktail and you will find the screwdriver on their best drinks list. The complexity of this drink lies in its innate simplicity. How simple can it get than vodka and an orange juice? The best part of this drink is that you don’t have to be a flaming bartender to get this cocktail right. You can very easily become the master of making screwdriver drinks by simply following the instructions to the T.

To begin making a screwdriver drink you have to first begin by getting your supplies in place. Since the drink elements are not complicated and are easily available, a trip to your neighborhood grocery store should be enough to get all that you need. All you need to do is make sure that you have all the ingredients handy before you start making your cocktails. You will need some good quality orange juice. Try freshly squeezed orange juice for a far superior and flavorful drink.

If you cannot lay your hands on oranges, you could use any good quality packaged orange juice. Along with the orange juice you will need a premium vodka. Most people skimp on the quality of the alcohol when they are making cocktails, but it is important to note that the more premium the alcohol, the better the cocktail it makes.

Getting the right glass for your screwdriver drink is also essential. You will need a tall 12 oz. highball glass to pour your drink in. To make the screwdriver you will need a shot glass full of good quality premium vodka and six ounces of orange juice. Pour the shot glass full of vodka into the tall glass and top it all the way up with orange juice. Use a stirrer or a spoon to mix the contents of the drink together and give it an even taste. You can then give the final flourish to the drink by fixing a slice of orange to the rim of the cocktail glass as the final garnish.

The history of the screwdriver drink is as vibrant as the drink itself. This drink supposedly got its name when petroleum engineers from the United States who were stationed in Saudi Arabia secretly began adding vodka to their orange juice cans. They used to mix the drink for an even taste with the help of their screwdrivers giving the drink its name.

The earliest reference to screwdriver drink was made in 1949 in an issue of the Time magazine where they mentioned the screwdriver as “a Yankee concoction”. As time progressed the screwdriver drink has also evolved in many different ways. One part of vodka and two part of orange juice went on to make a poor man’s screwdriver. When orange juice was replaced by a carbonated orange drink it made the screwdriver the ‘Hi Fi’. The screwdriver became a Samerreto when a sweet liqueur like Amaretto was added to it. Wherever you go, you can get a thousand different variations of the screwdriver so its time you tried out your own.
