How to twist martini ingredients for different martini variations

When you want to make a martini the right way, then you have to make sure that you have the right martin ingredients. A martini is a cocktail drink that was made traditionally by mixing gin, vermouth and bitters. It had to be garnished with either an olive or a lime twist and served in a martini glass. Since its origins in the mid 1800’s the martini had grown and evolved getting interpreted in many different ways. Today, a martini doesn’t necessarily have to be made with gin. A martini made with vodka will equally qualify to be a martini just as a martini made with gin.

There are a few martini lovers who believe that when a martini is not made the traditional way then it cannot be called a martini. They feel that it is very unfair to label any cocktail concoction as a martini just because it is being served in a martini cocktail glass. But for a martini lover, the martini ingredients are actually a playground to create many versions of a superior quality drink.

The classic martini was made by using Old Tom sweet gin and dry vermouth. These two ingredients were added together in a mixing glass and stirred for a period of thirty seconds. A dash of orange bitters gave the drink the perfection it desired and it was then strained in a martini glass and served with an olive or a lime twist. The orange bitters were an optional addition. With time the orange bitters faded in being used in making a classic martini.

The time of the Prohibition saw a huge surge in the rise in popularity of the martini. As the Prohibition ended the martini became drier as gin became more easily available. Some martini lovers began to like their martinis dry. A dry martini was one martini variation which saw very little or no use of any vermouth. With some variation in the martini ingredients a host of martini cocktails can be made. By simply supplementing the olive or lime twist from the martini and switching it with an onion gives you the Gibson.

When you want to make a dirty martini all you will need to do is add a little bit of olive brine to the main drink and mix it. Serve this garnished with an olive and you have the best dirty martini.

Martini ingredients can be changed according to an individual’s taste buds. For those who are not particularly crazy about gin, a martini can be made equally easily with vodka. You simply need to use vodka instead of the gin and you will get an equally refreshing vodka martini. A nice change is the fifty- fifty martini. The martini ingredients for this drink remain the same. All you need to do is use equal portions of gin and dry vermouth and mix it in a mixing glass half filled with ice cubes. Stir the drink until it is cold and then strain and serve in a martini glass garnished with an olive or two.
